During the early 90s, we started playing football as a healthy pastime. As time went by, we found that we had enough talent to compete at a higher level. Our toils, co-operation of all our members and encouragement from our well wishers motivated us to form a Football Club. We decided to name the club as Acme Sports Club and was officially registered under Madurai District Football Association on 20th of July 1996. For the first few years our base was in the township of Thirunagar. Then for the convenience of our players we moved to Thiruvalluvar Nagar ground in Thanakkankulam village panchayat. Mr.Alagappan, former Madura Coats player obliged to be our coach. His vast experience and knowledge has been instrumental in our club’s success so far. He was a pivotal member of the famed Madura Coats team that lifted the Vittal Trophy in the year 1976.
Our team was formed with enthusiastic youngsters from Thirunagar and Thiruvalluvar Nagar. They were a motley bunch of self employed youth, college students and school boys. Activities and responsibilities of the club were shared by the elected office bearers. We have been operating our own bank account since 1998 (A/c No. 4422, Bank of India, Thirunagar Branch). Our main source of finance is the players’ subscription and donations from our well wishers. The first aid, Minor medical expenses and Traveling expenses are taken care of by the club. Jerseys are provided by the club. The Football boots and other kits are supplied at a concession and are collected in easy installments. Our club is run more like a family than as an organisation.
Obviously the objective of any organisation would be to succeed at the highest level. Our basic objective is to offer responsible and energetic youth to build a healthy society. This cannot be achieved without persistence, perseverance and self discipline. The youth has unlimited energy. By engaging the youth in any sporting activity we divert them from indulging in anti social activities. Here the kids learn to respect others and follow certain set of rules. Sport also instills the importance of team work and co-operation. They learn to accept rivalry and defeat graciously and achieve their goal by fair means. These above qualities make up a great character essential for a healthy society. Last but not least, we want to be one of the top teams in the country.
All our past achievements are the first step towards bigger & brighter future. By the year 2012 we want to be a top club in Tamilnadu. We have planned to conduct summer football coaching camps targeting young local boys to spot the talent and mould them into future stars. Within a year we have planned to set up a Football academy. The funds to run the academy will be mobilised by way membership fees, donation from our ex-players, sponsorships from corporate houses and support from local well wishers. Arranging tuitions and special classes to support the young players’ academic needs are also in the pipeline. We are striving to make our club the benchmark in Madurai.
